What does it take to get a Wine Spectator Award of Excellence?

My name is Robin Goldstein, and I’m the author of a new book called The Wine Trials (book here; website here). Lately, I’ve become curious about how Wine Spectator magazine determines its Awards of Excellence for the world’s best wine restaurants.The following I presented at the Second Annual Conference of the American Association of Wine Economists (AAWE) in Portland.
As part of the research for an academic paper I’m currently working on about standards for wine awards, I submitted an application for a Wine Spectator Award of Excellence. I named the restaurant “Osteria L’Intrepido” (a play on the name of a restaurant guide series that I founded, Fearless Critic). I submitted the fee ($250), a cover letter, a copy of the restaurant’s menu (a fun amalgamation of somewhat bumbling nouvelle-Italian recipes), and a wine list.
Osteria L’Intrepido won the Award of Excellence, as published in print in the August 2008 issue of Wine Spectator. (Not surprisingly, the Osteria’s listing has since been removed from Wine Spectator’s website.) I presented this result at the meeting of the American Association of Wine Economists in Portland, Oregon, on Friday, August 15.
The main wine list that I submitted was a perfectly decent selection from around Italy that met the magazine’s basic criteria (about 250 wines, including whites, reds, and sparkling wines–some of which scored well in WS). However, Osteria L’Intrepido’s high-priced “reserve wine list” was largely chosen from among some of the lowest-scoring Italian wines in Wine Spectator over the past few decades.
While it’s interesting that the reserve list would receive such seemingly little scrutiny, the central point is that the wine cellar doesn’t actually exist. And while Osteria L’Intrepido may be the first to win an Award of Excellence for an imaginary restaurant, it’s unlikely that it was the first submission that didn’t accurately reflect the contents of a restaurant’s wine cellar.
Restaurants, like all businesses, have strong incentives to embellish their images online. We turn to experts and awards bodies to help navigate the chaotic world of information and misinformation that results. If Google, Chowhound, and a couple of unanswered phone calls suffice to verify not just the existence of a restaurant but also the authenticity of its wine list, then it’s not clear what role the critic is playing.

I fail to see the point of this. You claim here it's that restaurants can present a false list. Did you investigate what happens when they do? How the Wine Spectator responds to complains about abuses? No.
You make a much bigger deal of the few bad wines on your blog. And by bad, I mean wines you carefully selected, which are highly regarded, from prestigious producers, but not to the liking of a specific critic.

In a rather amazing coincidence, I inadvertently got involved with the recent Wine Spectator Award fiasco. On a recent trip to Milan, I had a memorable dinner at the infamous Osteria L'Intrepido. I suppose that it's now somewhat academic, but I highly recommend the Uovo in raviolo con ricotta, spinach, e tartufo bianco. The wine list was impressive, and I clearly remember the sommelier bragging about their recent Award of Excellence. I found out later (about $250.00 later) that I had dined in a restaurant that doesn't exist.
It was particularly upsetting, because I had checked out the very positive reviews on the Chowhound web site, I have always made it a point to study those invaluable public reviews to make absolutely sure of enjoying a positive restaurant experience. If you dine out often enough, you are probably going to visit a restaurant that’s not really there - at least once in a while. It’s no big deal as long as the food and service are as good as advertised.
While this entire episode was embarrassing to the Wine Spectator, I have always wondered why the folks at the Five Diamond Awards never seem to be embarrassed. Maybe it’s because they seem to always get it right.
I know this sounds ridiculous, but if the restaurant was actually there, I would definitely go back. And I actually think the Wine Spectator should be applauded for including this restaurant in their awards program. With all due respect, all of the critics presently bashing the Magazine never even took the time to visit Osteria L'Intrepido.
